Dr. Andrew Agwunobi, President/CEO of Grady Health System

In 1997, Agwunobi moved to Boston to become chief of the main pediatric urgent-care department of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (HVMA), a 500+ physician multigroup practice in Boston. While working with HVMA, he also served as a primary-care instructor for Harvard medical students and ambulatory pediatric fellows.

In 1999, Agwunobi was accepted to the full-time, 2-year MBA program at Stanford Graduate School of Business (one of 350 accepted out of 6,000 applicants). During his stay at Stanford he continued to practice as an urgentcare pediatrician at Palo Alto Medical Center (PAMC) in California.
In June of 2001,Agwunobi joined South Fulton Medical Center (SFMC)in East Point, Georgia as the chief operating of
Agwunobi led SFMC through a massive ransformation, which included converting SFMC from a bankrupt hospital to financial stability one that exceeded its earningsand volume targets each year under his leadership, while also reducing nurse vacancies from over 40 percent to six percent and achieving the greatest improvement in employee and physician satisfaction scores in the region. Additionally, Agwunobi implemented a wide range of customer service initiatives, which resulted in SFMC being named a “5-Star” Tenet facility. In April 2003, Agwunobi was awarded the coveted Tenet “CEO Circle of Excellence Award” - the highest CEO recognition at Tenet.
During his tenure at SFMC, Agwunobi was also awarded Georgia Trend magazine’s annual “40 Under 40 Rising Stars” (2002) and Modern Healthcare’s annual “2002 Up & Comers Award for Rising Stars in Health Care Management.” In March 2004, Agwunobi was selected “Speaker of the Year” by the Atlanta Peachtree Rotary. In the June 25, 2004 and June 24, 2005 special sections of the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Agwunobi was featured as one of the “Most Inshaping the Atlanta community. Also recently, Agwunobi was featured in Atlanta Magazine’s “Atlanta’s Top 40 Most InTrend magazine’s 2005 “100 Most Inthe Trailblazer Award in May 2005 from The Atlanta Business League.
Grady Health System is the largest public hospital-based health system in the Southeast. Included in the system are Grady Memorial Hospital, Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital, 10 neighborhood/airport health centers and the only level 1 trauma center within a 100-mile radius. Grady has a nationally acclaimed burn unit and diabetes center, the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center and the Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence. Grady is also the primary teaching facility for Emory University School of Medicine and Morehouse School of Medicine, whose faculty and residents provide all of Grady’s medical care.
Since beginning his tenure at Grady, Agwunobi serves on Georgia State University’s College of Health and Human Sciences Board of Advisors, the Butler Street YMCA Board of Directors, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, 191 Club Board of Governor’s, Central Atlanta Progress, Inc. Board of Directors, Atlanta Regional Health Forum, Inc. Board of Directors, National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems Board of Directors, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation/Better Beginnings Advisory Council, Atlanta Fulton Family Connection Board of Directors, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Board of Advisors, the Georgia Hospital Association Board, 1st Medical Network Board of Directors, the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals Board and the Emory University Board of Visitors.
Agwunobi’s affiliations include the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Georgia Association of Healthcare Executives, Partners for International Development, the Hospital Executive Council, Leadership Georgia Class of 2005, 100 Black Men of Atlanta and the Rotary Club of Atlanta. He is on the Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems for the Association of American Medical Colleges Assembly, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Agwunobi’s wife is a physician, and they have two young daughters.
